The Rev. Krista L. Betz will join the staff of The Pension Boards-United Church of Christ, Inc. as Director of Ministerial Assistance on October 1. The Rev. Betz, who since 2010 has served as Interim Conference Minister of the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ, will succeed the Rev. Dr. M. Douglas Borko, who will retire at the end of 2012.
As Director of Ministerial Assistance, her key responsibilities will include fund development, including the annual Christmas Fund Offering for the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund; selection, training and evaluation of approximately 150 annuitant visitors; administering emergency grants, permanent grants and Christmas checks; determining eligibility for pension and health supplementation; and directing the Next Generation Leadership Initiative: Target 2030 program.
The Rev. Betz is a life-long member of the United Church of Christ and was ordained as a UCC minister in 1995. She brings to her new position extensive experience in Conference ministry, pastoral ministry and chaplaincy. From 1995-2003, she was Pastor of Parkway United Church of Christ in St. Louis, Missouri. As Pastor of Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Augusta, Missouri from 2003-2009, she helped stabilize worship attendance and financial giving and organized four adult mission trips to New Orleans in response to Hurricane Katrina. While at Ebenezer, she also served as a part-time chaplain at St. John Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri. From 2007-2009, she served as Acting Associate Conference Minister of the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the United Church of Christ, where she staffed the Conference's Committee on Ministry, and trained and supported search committees in the Eastern Association. Her service to the national setting of the United Church of Christ has included the Council of Conference Ministers (2010-present); Parish Life and Leadership Fitness Review Task Force (2011); Constitution and Bylaw Revision Committee (2010-2011); Executive Council (1999-2009); and Board of Directors of the Office of General Ministries (1999-2005). She has also served as a member of the Missouri Mid-South Conference Search Committee (2006-2007) and Planning Ministry (2002-2006) and co-chaired the Conference's Transition Team (2005-2007). Additionally, the Rev. Betz has taught UCC History and Polity at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis and Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Rev. Betz holds a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education and social studies from the University of Illinois (1992) and a Master of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary (1995). Her continuing education includes two units of Clinical Pastoral Education; training in interim and transitional ministry through the Interim Ministry Network; mediation skills training; and programs in denominational executive leadership, human resources and business administration.
