CREDO TishaPearls for the Journey: Take Self-Care Seriously
By Rev. Tisha Brown*

In my years of ministry, I have observed a lot of my colleagues working far too many hours, and not tending to their physical, emotional, or spiritual health. As a result, their enthusiasm and creativity for ministry stagnates. Clergy wellness is possibly one of the most important things we can emphasize as a church.

Thankfully, I was blessed to be among those chosen for the pilot project of the Pension Boards-United Church of Christ CREDO (PBUCC CREDO) program. As soon as I read the description of what we would be doing, I knew this program would be just what I needed at the mid-point of my ministry career. I was within my first couple of years in a Conference ministry position, and I thought the PBUCC CREDO Seminar would help me determine how best to level-up my leadership and self-care for this new role. I also hoped to gain insights on my first 15 years in ministry that would guide me to the next 20 plus years.

The most significant experience for me has been the seeds that were planted in the 18 months since the Seminar, and which have borne fruit. One year after PBUCC CREDO, I reviewed my goals. I couldn't believe how much those goals had guided and shaped my life. I was now more equipped to take self-care more seriously than ever before. I also started a Doctor of Ministry program that is transforming my sense of vocation. The PBUCC CREDO seminar helped me to focus on these elements and really give them care and attention, both vocationally and personally.

All four wellness areas (spiritual, vocational, financial, and psychological and physical health) covered in PBUCC CREDO were crucial, but I was particularly appreciative of the vocational insights and encouragement I received from the faculty and my cohort.

If you are burning the candle at both ends, I encourage you to participate in this eye-opening Seminar. It will be transformational if you commit fully to allowing the care you receive and the insights you gain to truly guide your life, ministry, and sense of call.

PBUCC CREDO is a holistic wellness benefit that offers clergy space and resources to examine significant areas of their lives and discern prayerfully the future direction of their vocation as they respond to God’s call in a lifelong process of practice and transformation.

The CREDO experience is anchored in a week-long Seminar and includes a pre-Seminar assessment and post-Seminar resources so that participants can deepen their commitment to lifelong wellness. Learn more about this program here
